| Jasper RoseJasper Rose is my pen name—okay, my alter ego—though if you're the main character of your own story, she's the so-called villain, who lives a double life. Sure, by day, I'm a good small-town girl with a good big-city degree in psychology, but by night? She's a dark romance author, not to mention in a love triangle between Mom's bodice rippers and big bro's graphic novels. Anyway, inspired by her favorite rogues' gallery—Harley Quinn and all—she writes books where the villain gets the girl and lives (After all, he stays that way.) |
Kiss or Kill"If I can't have you, angel, no one can." Three years ago, a criminally insane serial killer confessed his love and threatened my life in the same breath, his an aching caress on my lips. My voice and mask of professionalism cracked when I couldn't help asking why he wanted me, if it was just because he saw himself in me like my other patient. It was doubt that made me bare my soul to The Sinner. Insecurity. After all, fear had already made me bare my body. What was my joke of a heart? If I'd known what he would say, what he would do, I wouldn't have asked—or frozen in his padded cell to begin with. I would have fled from the Metropolitan State Hospital and never looked back, except to look over my shoulder. Ever since then, I have looked over my shoulder, but never locked eyes with his cold ones again. Not when I was a psychiatrist. Not now I'm an inmate, involuntarily committed. When I do, will I forgive him like his angel? Or will I avenge myself like my own? Even if he kills me . . . |
